PVP Update (Changed to Optional)

Quick Update: After a year of internal debate and listening to feedback, we have decided not to "police" the Internet in regards to our service. So we have decided not to bother trying to block malicious users from misusing our service, as it is an uphill battle and angered many legitimate users anyway.

Since we are no longer going to fight the malicious use battle, we have less reason to enforce PVP and have decided, as of today, to no longer enforce PVP for Free users. It is now optional for all users. Due to abuse, we were also forced to do away with the free "inside pages" and "unlimited bandwidth" on PVP. So there is really no reason to use it any longer.

The only caveat is that the other issue that pushed us to PVP was abuses of our system by webmasters signing up for multiple accounts. So the new "Free" (non PVP) account will have a reduced bandwidth, going from 5Gb down to 1Gb. That should be enough for most of the free users, based on our metrics, and an upgrade to Basic or PLUS will bump back up to the 5Gb.

Does this mean that I can remove the use of "stw_pagepix" for non-Basic/PLUS accounts and use the standard "http://images.shrinktheweb.com/xino.php?" method to get the thumbnail for local caching for all STW users?

For Basic/PLUS accounts, there was never any requirement for the pagepix.js code. So I'm a bit confused by the question there.

However, you may offer a completely free version that uses the xino.php (like it used to be), and that means that caching locally will also be supported. There are no code changes or differences between Free, Basic, or PLUS. Only the limits differ between the versions.

Think I said for "non" Basic/PLUS accounts but you answered my question. Back to xino.php.

Cheers,

Jeff

Jeff,

You sure did. Dealing with another "catastrophe" and misread your post. Glad the answer was still in there. Wink

It no longer matters for me, I just went and captured a frontpage of all the sites I prefer to link to and placed them on my site with the link. I found the cost of this service to be somewhat outrageous and considering that I don't have a "shopping" site, I wouldn't have minded perhaps a yearly fee, but not a per month fee. So I took it upon myself to just create a thumbnail from the captures and place them along with my links script.

Yeah, if you have a small set of listings that do not change often, then our service is not for you. It "may" make sense now just to keep them updated automatically, but no need to pay a fee, when the free service works for most low volume users.
