Unsubscribed or Banned Message

Hello All

I use Shrink The Web on my site BlogSynergy.com, and here's an example in action: http://www.blogsynergy.com/blogs/garden-advice-guide/ - I woke up today to see the "Unsubscribed or Banned Message" message for no apparent reason.

I've not received an email saying there's an issue, and as far as I can see, I'm not causing issues with the ToS.

Any ideas? BlogSynergy.com is in the middle of a sale, so it's pretty embarrassing for me!

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

Got your email too, but I'll answer here as it may benefit others.

At first glance, it appears that your scenario is as follows:

  • using the advanced method to cache images locally
  • using the lock to account feature
  • entered in domains (not IPs)

So whenever you are using advanced method, the referrer is the server IP. Therefore, you need to enter the IP address of your server when using the "lock to account" feature. Since it might be easier for you to get going quickly, I simply turned off "lock to account" for now. It is rare that credentials are misused anyway and not likely by the time you sell your site.

However, because you seem to be caching the error images, you need to refresh your cache. Some of our sample code would help to eliminate caching the error image but it probably doesn't matter as much, since you are selling the site. Wink

Aside from that, I see no reason why you would get the banned message (unless your IP is banned for multiple accounts or something but to check that I'd need to know your server IP).

Hope that helps!

-The Brandon

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried the lock feature after I was experiencing the issue, just in case.

Even with the caching, I still get the issue. I've just cleared the cache on that site and another site using the same details, and I still get the banned message.

Server IP is 212.113.128.232. However, I only the 1 account. So I don't know what's going on. That said, did you have a big API change of late? Could that be an issue?

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

While we did make major code changes, no issues have been reported and no API changes have been made.

I just checked the banned logs and your IP is listed. I have just now unbanned your IP but another account ("Adam") is using the same IP. Since this is an advanced request and the same IP, it doesn't leave much room for error. Are you familiar with that account?

Best regards,

Brandon

Hi Brandon

It's shared hosting, so there's no question that there's a chance of someone abusing Shrink The Web service. I've no knowledge of the other account. Is there a way to ban a specific account rather than a whole ip address? Otherwise this issue might be quite common....

Thanks
Dan

I see.

There IS a way to ban a specific account, but if that other account doesn't belong to you; then the other user isn't abusing the service either.

The "banned" checking is a work-in-progress and meant to catch those who are abusing the service. We will have to brainstorm how to handle multiple accounts from the same IP on shared accounts, as this will undoubtedly become more common as our service continues to grow.

Thank you for the clarification.

Until we feel comfortable with the "banning" algorithm, it will remain as a manual review process. So you won't get banned again. Sorry for the inconvenience. Wink

Cheers,

Brandon

The same problem here at http://besttravelwebsites.com (here example page: http://besttravelwebsites.com/vacation-deals-at-go2travel365-com/ , example image: http://besttravelwebsites.com/wp-content/themes/directorypress/thumbs/go2travel365.com.jpg)
Can you please help. Not sure how to check the IP of the website, but it's a share hosting too.
Thanks a lot

Hello,

I see by the link paths that you are using DirectoryPress, so I think your issue or more likely related to the following thread (than this one):
