Earlier today, we sent out an email to all active users.

The time has finally come. We've been planning all year to move to a respected email service provider and we are finally ready to do so.

However, they require that we "clean up" our user database by having all active users confirm their opt-in status and agree (double opt-in again) to accept our newsletters and important maintenance notifications. We will soon be exercising our right to suspend any unsubscribed or unconfirmed accounts, so please take action soon to avoid service interruption.

The reason that unsubscribed and unconfirmed accounts will be disabled is because it has caused undue burden on our support staff when those users complain that they did not receive important notices (not realizing that is what unsubscribing means, I suppose). We must streamline our support process so that we can provide superior service to those who make it easy on us to do so. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we progress through these growing pains. Wink

At some point relatively soon, we will pull in all of the accounts that did not re-confirm or that have unsubscribed and will deactivate those accounts permanently.

To avoid service interruption, please take a moment to re-confirm. If you did not receive the email, then please open a support ticket.

"agree (double opt-in again) to accept our newsletters" and "suspend any unsubscribed accounts"

So you are closing any accounts that you can't SPAM?

Jeremy,

We have NEVER spammed our email list. The only emails we have ever sent to our users have been informational (maintenance, code changes, service updates, etc.) Personally, I resent the accusation. The entire purpose of this new email service provider is to be able to better communicate with our users. If you do not wish to receive our emails please feel free to opt out.

Frank

I read the above to say....well, what it says. That opting out = closed account. Please clarify it if that's not what it's meant to mean.

And don't take it personally, it's a valid question considering what it says.

Finally, it would really helpful if there was info/link in this thread to tell what we need to do exactly.

That IS what is meant. You read it correctly.

As Frank said, we never spam. If you are a competitor posing as a user (which happens frequently) or just angry that this awesome service (that you do not pay for) wants to be able to communicate with you to provide superior service; then perhaps you should try another service that doesn't care about you (and will probably go offline for months without notice or explanation).

Best of luck to ya.

opting out + closed account = bad policy. What other service requires you to get emails to have an account with them?

No one minds getting important emails about system issues and such. But I think many people would expect to be able to opt out of newsletters and unnecessary emails.

Do what you want, it's your business. But we'll see how that goes over with others as you grow.

Best of luck to YOU.

I think the distinction, based on you saying you should be able to opt out of newsletters (and unnecessary emails), is that our newsletters ARE important emails. They are not sent out like, "oh hey, just wanted to say hi and get you to join some new social site." They are sent in order to update users on upcoming features (pretty important) and what to expect as we grow. Aside from newsletters and maintenance notices, we have never sent anything else, so "unnecessary emails" does not really apply.

We do not send out emails like, "hey you! sign up for this new social service that paid us $1k to send an ad."

Not trying to argue. Just FYI.

I don't think that's what the word "newsletters" means.

I don't mind that, I have opted in. I just think the wording on all of that sounds sketchy at best. Perhaps if you clarify what you said here it won't seem as obtrusive to others who might be put off by it.

Just trying to help.

Jeremy,

I think you highlight an untouched topic that I haven't heard brought to light before. Perhaps the email marketers out there have successfully tainted the word "newsletters" and many people, like yourself, just assume the worst now. I don't necessarily blame you and I see you haven't been a member long enough to know "how" and "what" we communicate. No harm done. The old-timers that have been around with us for years can vouch that we send only relevant and helpful emails.

The "email marketers" are really why we must make the switch to an email service provider anyway. Perhaps it is time to round up the "email marketers" and slay them once and for all!

"I see you haven't been a member long enough to know "how" and "what" we communicate." - Exactly right.

And I appreciate the clarification on the matter. Sorry if I came across as brash. I have no filter.
