Hard Drive Failure

Just a quick note that our storage array suffered a hard drive failure last night, but the hot spares kicked in and rebuilt on-the-fly. Then, we had the failed hard drive hot-swapped this morning and the storage array regenerated successfully.

This failing drive is probably the cause for last month's brief outage (due to corrupted inodes), but there was no downtime this time because we have been paying extra for hot-spares and hot-swap capability. So -hopefully- this will cure the storage array and keep things moving along as usual.

Best regards,

Brandon

Saw your email just now. You guys should just design and build your own hardware just like facebook. Cool

Hehe... if only it were so easy. Facebook was a joke back when they got their hundreds of millions in investment. That enabled them to actually make something of their "broken" site. Fortunately, they pulled it off and have something to talk about, even though they have been going about monetization all wrong.

You can probably tell I have little respect for facebook Tongue but I do agree with you that it would be nice to have our own solution. However, our service is priced to just barely pay for itself and we are actually in the process of lowering our prices (and income over the short-term) in order to bring our service to more users. So we must count every penny and are not interested (or able) to bring on investment like facebook did. They knew the right people and managed to sell vaporware. Kudos to them. We don't have vaporware but the investment climate is a bit pickier these days on speculative "new markets" like ours.

Thanks for the feedback and I hope you enjoy the service. Smile

Wow its already quite low now. Never knew much about how they started Facebook, from your point of view, that is. Oh well, too bad the market works that way. But just a reminder, when you offer cheaper service, there will be user surplus. Which also means hard drive failure more often (no offence) Tongue

It sounds like you gathered all the users into 1 huge server. Separating them into clusters might do good for you.

I do like your service and hope you guys stick around as long as you can.

Actually, we do have a distributed platform but the storage array does share a common backbone. That backbone is what is having issues, unfortunately. We have evaluated alternatives, such as Mosso cloud, Amazon S3, NAS, SAN, etc. The only thing, at-the-time, able to handle our needs was an expensive DAS solution.

We have been evaluating alternatives again this year and Amazon S3 and others have made good improvements but may still not be good enough. Hopefully we will find something better soon.

Take it easy!

Does this failure caused some malfunctions?
My directories stoped showing thumbnails since this morning.

Thanks!

My website has stopped showing thumbnails as well. I can't tell if it's because of the hard drive failure, or the pricing model changes.

It's all related to the storage array failure and is explained in the outage notices.

No issue like this would be related to pricing model changes.

Please ensure that you receive our emails, otherwise you will not know what is going on as we keep everyone informed.

The process to fix the inode problem is still running. Unfortunately there is no progress bar or like indicator. As soon as the process completes we should know more and hopefully have service restored at that time. Thanks for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience.

Best Regards,
Frank
